- Read through this help page.
- Go to Category:Imported places and select place(s) to work on. If you want to adopt a region, you can use the Faceted search on imported places, then select In City/State/Country etc. under "Properties," the select the location you want to filter on from the blue list that comes up in the bottom left corner.
- Maybe shout out in the #stencil-wiki channel in the Discord what batch of things you will be processing so we aren't duplicating efforts.
- Research the space and check/correct the things outlined in this guide—being especially careful to change their status from "Import" to an updated status.
Help:Validating a place
The 1064 places in the wiki are a huge body of information that is routinely going out of date. Periodically pages need to be validated—checked for accuracy and updated as needed. In a perfect world, this is managed by the people who run the places represented in the articles, but often this task falls to the broader group of wiki editors.
Places should be validated:
- If their status is unknown—Category:Places of unknown status.
- If they are active or temporarily closed and have not been edited within 1 year.
Process
Changes to place pages should be made using the Edit with form button at the top of the page. (It's helpful to have a tab displaying the place page and another with the form.)
For each place, check the following:
- That the place still exists/is open and that the place type(s) are still accurate.
- More information about the options for both of these can be found at Help:Places.
- That the site link(s) aren't broken.
- That the ink colors + machines are still correct as far you can tell.
- That coordinates are provided if a street address is listed in the wiki.
- To find coordinates in Google Maps, look up the address, then right click the pin and click on the coordinates at the top of the window that pops up—this will add them to your clipboard.
If the place is active, but the article is a stub (fairly empty, limited content):
- Pull a description from their about page for the article text if it's blank.
- Link to a shop/blog/or social media if they have one.
- Add any services their site describes.
Once you're done with your edits, make sure that the status has been updated and hit Save page at the bottom of the form to save your changes. You can optionally provide a message about the update you made. This update will be timestamped, saved to your username, and immediately made live on the page.
Contacting studios
If, after your research you still can't determine if a place is active or not, but you do have contact info for them, please feel free to reach out and ask for more info, or for them to update the page on their own.
Here's a form letter you can tailor and use for this:
Hi __________, I hope this message finds you well! I’m currently working on updating and modernizing An Atlas of Modern Risography, a comprehensive resource mapping Riso users around the world. As part of this effort, I’ve been revisiting existing listings to ensure they’re accurate and up-to-date. I wanted to confirm the details for __________. Are you still printing with a duplicator? If so, could you share which machine(s) and colors you’re currently using, as well as when you first started working with Riso? If you’ve stopped working with Riso, I’d love to know what machines and colors you previously used and the years you started and stopped. Here’s the information I have so far for your listing: https://new.stencil.wiki/wiki/__________ This updated Atlas aims to provide both a historical overview of Riso printing and a clear picture of who is currently active in the field. If you’re able to share any updates or additional details, it would be greatly appreciated. You're also welcome to join in the wiki and update that page on your own if you'd like! Thank you in advance for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you! Best regards, __________
